Your Guide to the Best Places to PaddleBoard around Austin

LADY BIRD LAKE

Lady Bird Lake is perhaps the most popular spot to paddle board in the city because of its calm, motorized watercraft-free waters and stunning views of downtown Austin. Plus, there are plenty of launch points and boat rentals along the lake, along with easy paddling access to peaceful Barton Creek. One of our favorite drop-in spots is the Austin High School Boat Launch, which offers a wide dock and plenty of nearby street parking.

LAKE AUSTIN

You will have to deal with occasional motor boat traffic on Lake Austin, but there are still plenty of beautiful nature views. If you’re exploring Lake Austin homes for sale, spending a day on the water is one of the best ways to experience the lake’s unique character. Launch from Walsh Boat Landing and paddle up the lake and back, or try Emma Long Metropolitan Park for a quiet paddle surrounded by towering cypress trees and stunning waterfront estates.

LAKE LBJ

Our personal favorite spot to get away is Lake LBJ. Located about 40 miles northwest of Austin, this constant-level lake offers ideal paddle boarding conditions throughout much of the year. There are plenty of launch spots, from public parks to marinas and private boat ramps. For smoother water, we recommend:

  • Bluebriar Park in Granite Shoals on West Bluebriar Drive offers swimming, picnic tables, and a boat ramp.
  • McNair Park in Sunrise Beach at 211 Park Road offers swimming, picnic areas, a boat ramp, restrooms, pavilions, and two fishing piers. It is open for day use beginning at 7 a.m.
  • Kingsland Community Park at 155 Lions Park Road features a boat launch, three boat docks, picnic tables, restrooms, and a pavilion for community gatherings.

LAKE TRAVIS

Lake Travis is the deepest and largest lake near Austin, reaching depths of over 200 feet. Just be sure to avoid especially windy days. Popular launch locations include Mansfield Dam Boat Ramp, Tom Hughes Park, and Cypress Creek Park, though most require an entry or parking fee.

INKS LAKE

If you’re considering Inks Lake homes for sale, a paddle around Inks Lake State Park is the perfect introduction to the area’s peaceful beauty. Located about an hour northwest of Austin at 3630 Park Road 4 West in Burnet, the park also offers hiking trails and a sprawling campground if you’d like to make a weekend of it. Don’t forget to take the paddle boards next time you drop off the kids at Camp Longhorn!
